Ah, I see. I’m actually also referring to countries that were colonised. I think most states today receive pressure to democratise regardless if they were colonised or not. My inspiration actually came from states that were colonised: specifically Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar.

The pressure to liberalise a state is a practice of soft power, as much as it is one of hard power.

Whether or not states have been colonised doesn’t negate the fact that each society has a different set of cultural and intellectual materials that construes ‘rights’ differently from one another. And I think that’s what’s important here.
