Written like a true philosopher. I’m a fan of Caplan as well. The idea that we should spend more time and effort in education resonates with me well. However, there’s huge societal pressure for mature adults to get out of school and start working. In this case, taking up the ‘bourgeois’ capitalist jobs.
Unfortunately, as David Graeber discusses, we’ve created a culture that views jobs as a necessity. Especially in Asian cultures, we’re all expect to work, and this results in many of us taking up bullshit jobs and shit jobs.
Education isn’t worthless. But the society which education is supposed to serve has made it so. And I utterly resent this.
